Despite significant variation across states in ECE infrastructure organization and operation, the administration requirements of the federal ECE-related programs help create a common Spectrum of Opportunities by which states, and to some extent communitities, can support ECE facilities in their jurisdictions to achieve recommended standards and best practices for obesity prevention. The links below describe each opportunity, including an example of how one state successfully pursued that opportunity.
The opportunities are listed roughly in order of potential reach, although true reach can vary significantly based on a number of factors. Not all opportunities need to be pursued successfully in each state to achieve meaningful impact; however, it is likely that multiple opportunities pursued as part of a coordinated approach will be most effective. Some opportunities would have a greater impact on children from low-income families and, thus, are particularly relevant for addressing income-related health disparities.
